Its a Wrangler with IFS …. I'd just get a Wrangler.

FJs are cool, but I think I'd rather have a JK Rubi.

The FJ (with the manual transmission) has 3 Torsen differentials—the center and rear can lock.

The Wrangler has no center differential, just a locking transfer case, plus open front rear & rear diffs (with lockers lockers on the Rubicon).

That's enough of a difference that one or the other may work better for a given person's criteria.

If it were me, I'd take the FJ for the 3 LSDs.

I almost bought one before I got my Xterra before I realized how terrible the visibility is. Still like the look of them though.

As long as this has the 5.3, then yes, I agree with you.

At least it has a body color roof, but they still don't work for me.

Maybe its the c pillar the size of a small car

I don't like it. maybe I like to see out of my car, maybe I prefer function over fashion, maybe a plastic caricature of an honest and loved vehicle offends me a little. Maybe I could just buy a 4Runner and and only miss out on the manual while getting back a much more practical vehicle for roughly the same price. I think its mostly because the people that made it could care less about all the things that made the FJ great and instead phoned it in. I mean it wasn't even designed by Toyota, instead the design was from a contest of teens and young adults. Capable? yes, Reliable? yes. Solid? yes. GREAT resale? yes. Half Assed? No question.

Unlike the Jeep, guaranteed to get you there. Not because it's more capable than the Jeep, it just won't break down as often.

No, the FJ with manual has max of 1 Torsen. If you get the manual you get a locking torsen in the full time transfer case. but you get open front and rear diffs. In the 4x2 you get a standard LSD that (as far as i can tell) isn't a torsen.

I'd take a hybrid - The Toyota drivetrain, with the Jeep body, but not made by Chrysler.

That way you get the best parts of both, with none of the downsides.

I've been price shopping used ones recently. Honestly, they hold their value so well it feels ridiculous to only pay 10,000$ under msrp for a 4 year old car with 80,000 miles on it. Even then, it would be a screaming deal compared to the avg prices.

and I bet they will continue to hold their value. Toyotas new TRD models just don't have the same appeal to the off road crowd.

Same here. I was looking at a TRD decked out version in dark green, almost BRG. It was gorgeous. Then I realized I couldn't see shit out the back or sides. Kinda depressing overall.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I've been working off the assumption that the Wikipedia page is correct. It says:

Four-wheel drive models equipped with the RA61F manual transmission have a full-time 4WD system that is permanently engaged; it employs front, center and rear TORSEN differentials, with a locking feature and distributes the engine's power 40:60 under most driving conditions. The TORSEN unit varies power distribution as needed, based on steering angle and wheel slippage. In the Lock position, the differential switches to 50:50 power distribution.

There's a citation, but it's to this book , which I don't have, and I can't confirm the info anywhere else.

I did find this press release , but it never specifically mentions the front or rear Torsen diffs. Selected info:

The FJ Cruiser's two-speed transfer case (with a 2.566 low range) is the same full-time four-wheel-drive transfer case used in the V6-powered 4x4 4Runner. In manual-transmission models, the transfer case uses a TORSEN® limited-slip center differential with a locking feature and distributes the engine's power 40:60 under most driving conditions. The TORSEN unit varies power distribution as needed, based on steering angle and wheel slippage. In the Lock position, the differential switches to 50:50 power distribution.

That's a lot of the same language as the Wikipedia page, but no mention of the front or rear diffs.

An electronic locking rear differential with an eight-inch ring gear is available.

So there is a rear locker.

The 4x2 FJ Cruiser comes standard with a virtual automatic limited-slip differential, provided and operated by an advanced traction-control system to enhance traction of both rear wheels in slippery driving conditions

So...basically traction control.

Dangit, stupid Wikipedia page with extraneous info! Here I thought the 6-speed FJ was a mythical 3-LSD beast.

Would be sweet, but tis not so. Still, with the center torsen locked, the rear diff locked and Atrac on, its pretty formidable, plus the torsen unlocked and trac would get you where you needed to go in the snow.

Yeah, having 3 LSDs isn't an absolute requirement just to be good in snow. I mean, my old WJ with just a center LSD (hydraulic gerotor type), open F/R diffs, and Uniroyal Laredo Cross Country all-season tires was pretty damn solid in the snow with the center unlocked. My 3-LSD WK with General Grabber AT2s is a few notches better. But probably significant overkill for my needs.

As far as I know...

3 LSDs w/ center locker
'99-'10 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Quadra-Drive
'06-'10 Jeep Commander w/ Quadra-Drive

3 LSDs (no lockers)
Mitsubishi Evo
Subaru STi

2 LSDs (center + rear) + center locker
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 w/ Quadra-Drive
Assorted GM pickups & SUVs
'01-'02 Mitsubishi Montero Limited
'02-'04 Montero Sport with the optional rear LSD

2 LSDs (center + rear), no lockers
Assorted turbo non-STi Subarus
Nissan GTR
Audi V8 Quattro
Assorted other Audis w/ the sport rear differential
BMW E30 325iX
Toyota Celica GT-Four ST205
Porsche 964 C4
Saab 9-3 XWD & Mazdaspeed 6 sorta kinda except they have Haldex for the center "diff"

Center LSD + 3 lockers
Mercedes G-Wagen
Toyota Land Cruiser 80 / Lexus LX450 (with optional front/rear lockers)

Center LSD + center/rear lockers
'99-'00 4Runner Limited (with optional rear locker)
'95-'00 Mitsubishi Montero SR/Winter Package
Toyota FJ Cruiser 6-speed (with optional rear locker)
'09 Toyota 4Runner Trail
'98-'99 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 / Lexus LX470 (with optional rear locker)
Mercedes W124 4Matic

Phew!
